yes. there is a very promising candidate: Wii Remote with WiiMotion Plus extension.
This wiimotion plus extension is basically a gyroscope, finally allow to detect rotations in all spacial dimensions, including the z-axis (this was not possible before with the acceleration sensor).

with that wiimotion plus i could imagine that you could rotate the piece on screen exactly like you rotate your wiimote. and then use the nunchuck for movements and drop.
